In this module, students are introduced to text-/word-processing software to create and edit short pieces of text. The aim is to learn how to input text using the keyboard, to use the mouse to move around within the document, and to access features like print, save and spellcheck. They learn how to save and retrieve documents. They begin to understand how to use the software to improve the accuracy of their work.
Students can use a keyboard to input a short piece of text (20–30 words) unaided – this could be their own original work or copied from given text.
Students should be able to select words, copy and paste words, delete words, add words and change words or punctuation within the text. To achieve this learning objective, students need to be able to make changes to the text but are not necessarily able to spot errors themselves.
Students should be confident enough with the software to be able to select icons such as save and print, and use the spellchecker (if available) without assistance.
In addition to the pass criteria, students show that they can name and save a document in the appropriate place (e.g. portable storage device, USB memory stick or hard disk) and can retrieve it later, without the teacher’s help, to make changes to it.
Students use a combination of proof reading (on screen or printed) and a spellchecker (if available) to ensure that their final text has been checked and corrected, without the teacher’s help.
At the end of this course, student will take the ICT Starters Assessment of Initial Steps Stage 1 Module 1 : Starting with Text.
Cambridge Certification is available at TWO stages.
